Tongue Piercing

A tongue piercing is a type of body piercing that involves the insertion of jewelry through the tongue. It is a popular form of body modification and self-expression.

The classic tongue piercing called a midline piercing, involves clamping the tongue with forceps then using a 14 gauge needle to pierce about halfway from the tip of your tongue to the frenulum linguae (tongue-tie) in the center of the tongue. The jewelry is then threaded through the needle, and the needle is removed.

Proper aftercare is crucial for the healing of tongue piercing. Here are some general guidelines to take care of your tongue piercing:
1. Rinse with saline solution or non alcoholic mouthwash after meals and before bed. Swish the solution in your mouth for about 30 seconds and then spit it out.
2. Avoid alcohol and harsh mouthwashes as they can be too abrasive and may hinder the healing process.
3. Continue with your regular oral hygiene routine, but be gentle around the piercing. Used soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid aggressive brushing around the jewelry.
4. Avoid hot, spicy, and acidic foods, as well as anything that could get caught on the jewelry.
If you experience swelling, sucking on ice chips can help reduce inflammation. Make sure the ice chips are small enough not to pose a choking hazard.
5. Avoid playing with the jewelry or moving the jewelry excessively with your tongue, as this can irritate the piercing.
If you experience persistent pain, swelling, redness, or discharge, consult with your piercer guidance.

The healing for a tongue piercing can vary from person to person, but on average, it takes about 2-4 months for the initial healing. During this period, it's crucial to follow proper aftercare guidelines, avoid disrupting the piercing, and maintain good oral hygiene to promote a smooth healing process. If you experience any unusual swelling, redness, or signs of infection, it's advisable to consult immediately with your piercer for guidance.
